Managing Eczema

BATHING

• Regular bathing can hydrate the skin, loosen crust from inflamed skin, help remove dirt and germs, and best of all, provide relaxation. It’s best to use a gentle fragrance-free wash that has no soap, like: NEOSPORIN^® MOISTURE ESSENTIALS™ Daily Body Wash, which is shown to be gentle and non-irritating even on eczema-prone skin. Be sure to bathe in warm (not hot) water, and try not to scrub or towel too aggressively. MOISTURIZING

• Moisturizers can hydrate the skin by preventing water loss and attracting water to the skin. Following a moisturizing routine every day, even when you have no symptoms, is the best way to help keep your eczema in control. If you’re experiencing itch and irritation, it’s important to use a moisturizer that does more than just restore moisture, as some moisturizers don’t go beyond this.
• Look for a moisturizer containing the skin protectant colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oats). • Cool temperatures, especially at night while sleeping, help to decrease sweating, which can cause irritation and itch.
• A humidifier helps prevent drying, and should be used in both winter and summer, when there is less moisture in the air.
• Wear soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton.
• Use mild detergents, with no bleach or fabric softener, on clothes, towels and bedding.
