Managing Eczema

Management Techniques For Living With Eczema

Managing eczema is often a combination of smart choices and a good routine. The goal of management is to maintain healthy skin, avoid flares, and when symptoms do occur, quickly relieve them with a product designed for skin with eczema. It’s important to remember that even if you aren’t experiencing a flare, you should continue to practice good skin care in order to keep your skin healthy.

To help with this, focus on daily skin moisturizing and avoid your known triggers, such as irritants and emotional stress.

Here are some things you can do at home to help keep your eczema under control:

Skincare: Bathing

Regular bathing can hydrate the skin, loosen crust from inflamed skin, help remove dirt and germs, and best of all, provide relaxation. It’s best to use a gentle fragrance-free wash that has no soap, which is shown to be gentle and non-irritating even on eczema-prone skin. Be sure to bathe in warm (not hot) water, and try not to scrub or towel too aggressively. Putting on moisturizer within 3 minutes after bathing has been shown to be better than applying to dry skin as it helps to preserve moisture.

Skincare: Moisturizing

  • Moisturizers can hydrate the skin by preventing water loss and attracting water to the skin. Following a moisturizing routine every day, even when you have no symptoms, is the best way to help keep your eczema in control. If you’re experiencing itch and irritation, it’s important to use a moisturizer that does more than just restore moisture, as some moisturizers don’t go beyond this.
  • Look for a moisturizer containing the skin protectant colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oats). As an active ingredient, colloidal oatmeal has been recognized by the FDA as a safe and effective skin protectant to temporarily protect and relieve minor skin irritation and itching due to eczema. NEOSPORIN® ECZEMA ESSENTIALS® Daily Moisturizing Cream contains colloidal oatmeal and has been clinically shown to restore visibly healthier skin in just 3 days.

  • Cool temperatures, especially at night while sleeping, help to decrease sweating, which can cause irritation and itch.
  • A humidifier helps prevent drying, and should be used in both winter and summer, when there is less moisture in the air.
  • Wear soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton.
  • Use mild detergents, with no bleach or fabric softener, on clothes, towels and bedding.
